Searching for a birth photographer you will be able to trust can seem daunting. You're inviting a stranger into such an intimate space with you and you want to know for sure you're making the right decision for your growing family. I want to assure you that you're in the right place and I'm here to walk you through this process and answer any questions you may have along the way. Let's start with the most frequent ones I receive!
Will a photographer be allowed in the delivery room?
COVID-19 has caused many moms to not be allowed more than 1 support person in the room with them during delivery. This has been such a tough season on laboring moms around the world! The good news is that there are a couple of local hospitals here in Northwest Arkansas that have opened up their visitor restrictions to include 2 support people! If you are delivering at Washington Regional, Mercy, or Northwest, you will definitely have the option of having a birth photographer with you during delivery! (I'm doing a happy dance over here!)
When do you arrive at a birth?
The answer to this question will vary from case to case but we will discuss several factors beforehand so I have an idea of how long your labor might last. I will ask you questions like:
- Have you given birth before?
- How long did you labor with previous children?
- Do you plan to deliver with or without the assistance of medication?
We will communicate frequently as your labor progresses and I will ask for updates regarding contraction pattern, dilation, and station. It is not wise to only rely on dilation as an indicator of when to arrive because there are so many other factors to consider that impact delivery.
What exactly do you photograph?
This is such a great question and for those who are not familiar with birth photography, it's understandable that you may have some reservations. Birth photography is about more than capturing the actual moment your child arrives. It's about telling the entire story. I take pictures of little details around the room, photos of your family supporting you, and the way your labor unfolds over time.
How many photos will we receive?
This will ultimately depend on which package we decide is best for you, but you can expect between 80-200 images that depict every intimate moment of your journey into parenthood.
What is included in your birth story packages?
Birth Story packages include a variety of options such as digital images, a 3-5 minute video, and a Newborn Story session. Whichever package you choose, you can count on me arriving during active labor and remaining up to 2 hours postpartum to capture all of the details you don't want to forget.
How much do I need to be prepared to spend when hiring a trusted birth photographer?
The cost of a professional birth photographer typically ranges from $1000-$3000+ and will vary depending on what is included in select packages. It is important to remember that payment plans are almost always accepted to make budgeting for this service even easier.
